China’s most celebrated dancer, Jin Xing (directly translated as “golden star”), and her company, Jin Xing Dance Theatre, will perform a retrospective of 10 of her best works over the last 25 years. Though not actually tango, Shanghai Tango, showcases contemporary Shanghai, a blend of east and west in dance, costumes, and music that mixes passions and cultures from both the past and the future. The choreography is graceful, subtle, and filled with visual appeal. Jin Xing’s sensuous dance style and her inspired choreography enchanted the audience in her home country and toured as well in countries all over Asia and Europe.

Stepping Gracefully Into Her Identity

When Jin Xing was last in New York in the early 1990s, the Chinese dancer was a confused young man reckoning with his sexual identity while trying to forge a career on the stage.

Two decades later, Jin Xing has returned to New York a very different person—for starters, she’s now a woman. Since undergoing a sex-change operation in Beijing in 1995, the 44-year-old performer and choreographer has rebuilt a reputation in the dance world, abandoning some of the male roles she once performed and building a new kind of celebrity in China partly around her altered identity.

Trained from age 9 in a Chinese military dance program—as a boy, Jin Xing studied classical Russian ballet to entertain troops while learning to wield a gun and detonate bombs—the performer rose to the rank of colonel before winning a national ballet competition and leaving for the U.S. at age 19 to study dance.

Berkshire Stonewall will be hosting our annual fundraiser at the Inn at Richmond on May 19, 2012. From 5:30-8pm the event will consist of a social hour with tapas catered by one of Berkshire County’s finest caterers, cash bar, and a few surprises.

Cocktail Party on Railroad Street

Berkshire Property Agents has graciously offered to sponsor a cocktail party fundraiser at their offices on Railroad Street in Great Barrington on Saturday, December 3, 2011 from 5pm – 7pm. The event will include a beer & wine bar, light refreshments, and will be the final stop for an art show put on by the Live Out Loud Youth Project, where their work will be displayed and auctioned off in a silent auction to raise funds for the youth group.

For those who wish to see the artwork it will be on display at New Stage throughout the month of November, and opened earlier this month as part of Out Berkshires Weekend.

Thanks to the generosity of Berkshire Property Agents this event is free and open to the public.
